Breif Outline

Here's my outline.. but It's extremely brief. I'm still not exactly sure how I'm going to set up my entire essay, so things are subject to change. Honestly I don't think I need a hardcore, detailed outline. The more brief it is, the better. That way when I'm writing it the ideas are flowing and that's when I write the best. Plus my notes are pretty much telling me where I'm going to go, so .. yeah here's my outline

Thesis: Should the American government intervene in third world genocide?

I. Stating some facts..
A) Somalia - explain what went terribly wrong in Somalia. How the public responded to what was happening to the U.S. rangers in Somalia. How this event keeps the future presidents from stopping Genocide. Clinton's policy during and after the incidents.
B) Give brief information about genocide in Rwanda and Sudan

II. Reasons for no intervention
A)Is it worth U.S. soldiers lives to save these people? There aren't any Americans in danger, so why should we care? Protect your assets and save your men. Don't waste American lives on problems that don't concern us.
B) Perhaps the media over hypes everything going on in Africa. Maybe they're aren't as many deaths and problems as everyone makes it out to be. Could just be the media trying to gain support to enter into war like they did in the Spanish-American War ["Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!"]
C) Can the United States afford to send in troops? Shouldn't we focus on the current domestic problems facing our country?

III. Reasons for Interference:
a) Humanity - How can you sit idly by and watch millions of people be slaughtered because of race or religion? Everyone has the right to live. Also, the people being killed haven't done anything wrong. They are being killed because one group wants total control.
b) After WWII, the United States and other nations said that they would not let genocide happen again, yet here we are and people are dying and no one is doing anything. What does that say about our society?
c) Yes, our economic crisis is hurting our country, but all of the countries in Africa don't have 1/8Th of the wealth we do. If those societies can function and survive, so can we.
d) Our troops are much more sophisticated than the people committing the genocide. With out resources and training, our troops would easily be able to take over the countries and return them to stability. If we turn these countries into stable, working societies than perhaps in the future we can create a strong trade with them, eventually benefiting the United States.
e) Genocide could happen to anyone, if the United States were going through a genocide, and you were apart of the group being killed, you would hope that some country would interfere and save your people.

  1. Hi Shannon,

While I admire you for choosing this topic, I think you should narrow your focus to make the task before you more manageable. Talk with me about this if you'd like some assistance.
